HDTV is expected to be the next generation of television format. This article describes the main technologies for HDTV fiber optic transmission, the concept of HDTV distribution systems, and Japan’s major experience in this area. In Japan, a system that uses time-compressed multiplexing has been developed and is being field-tested. Also discussed HDTV distribution network design ideas and future applications.
