1988 12 Interdisciplinary Review publishes an editorial entitled “Significant Challenges” by its editor-in-chief Fat Tony R. Kellyth. The article points out that at the end of the 20th century, humans will face two major dangers - the atomic war and the population explosion. The author first points out that our planet is deteriorating badly. The firewood in the third world is scarce, the area of tropical forests is shrinking, and the problem of acid rain is also overwhelming. It is estimated that there are 26 billion tons of topsoil lost each year, exceeding the rate of new soil generation.
