Two main technologies have appeared, that are changing the relationship of humans with information. One is the digitisation of radio/television enabled by the MPEG-2 standard, and the other the infrastructure-independent networking capabilities made possible by the Intet. The two technologies, however, are largely complementary and,in spite of many efforts to favour a convergence, still largely antithetic. In October 1998,MPEG-4,a new standard of the MPEG family, will be released by the MPEG Committee. The standard has been designed to provide support to the radio/television and Intet paradigms, and is therefore poised to become the enabling technology for their convergence.
