爱伦堡是苏联的一位名作家及诗人,尤长于写报告文艺的作品。当西班牙内战时,他曾为「消息报」写过不少美丽的通信;当巴黎陷落时,他正在巴黎,目睹了法兰西的悲剧,他现在所写的一本长篇小说:「巴黎之陷落」,就是拿法国的崩溃来做主题。德苏战争爆发之后,爱伦堡曾写过一封致全世界作家的信,号召全世界的作家起来反对法西斯,和为保护文化而战。我地所译的这篇文章,也是他在这次战后所写的。
