如翁文灏所说:“中国人入中国之校,从中国之师以研究中国之地质者”始于北洋政府工商部地质调查所下属的地质研究所。“地质研究所”实际上是一所地质学培训班,它于1913年创立、于1916年停办,历时三年。培养了如叶良辅、谢家荣、刘季辰、王竹泉、周赞衡、谭锡畴等优秀的地质人才,奠定了中国地质学进一步发展的基础。它在中国地质教育史中也占有重要的地位。那么,谁是地质研究所的创立者呢?当时的地质调查所所长是丁文江,地质研究所所长一职也由丁兼任。因之人们很自然地认为丁文江就是地质研究所的创立者。丁文江在《工商部试办地质调查说明书》中疾呼:
