根据彝文古籍的记载,彝族远古史一共经历了哎哺、尼能、什勺、米姆、举偶和笃慕六个相继重要的时代。被称为“哎哺世系”时代的是彝族远古史上的第一个历史时代,彝族先民认为“哎哺”是最初的物质元素,世上万物都由“哎哺”运动、发展变化而形成,它是万物之本,因此把“哎哺”用来称呼彝族最早的时代、最早的先民和最早的氏族,故而“哎哺”时代是彝族基本形成的时代。
