The Centaur is a surrealistic work by the American writer John Updike in 1963. The story takes the Greek mythology and combines the reality with the myth. The story revolves around a core contradiction of dialectical relations, the so-called main line of contradiction between human beings, legends and the earth. Thematic construction and characterization also highlight a series of binary oppositions between heaven and earth, between God and man, between country and city, and between the past and the present. This profoundly reveals the contradicting, complex and chaotic survival dilemma of ordinary modern Americans And the author’s basic judgment of human nature.
