With the increasing application of coherent technology such as pulse frequency dispersion in radar systems, the importance of measuring and linearizing the phase transmission characteristics of radar and its ancillary systems is even more emphasized. The measurement of the total phase transfer characteristics of a high power pulsed microwave transmitter becomes difficult due to the nature of the signal pulse. This article reviews several microwave comparison techniques currently in use and introduces a new type of phase analyzer. This analyzer uses an IF method and a coherent de-frequency loop that compares the phases between pulsed microwave discrete frequency signals within the radar transmitter path. Under different discrete impulses, the phase transfer characteristics over time or frequency, or the response to time-frequency, can be dynamically displayed on the oscilloscope to achieve 0.1 degree accuracy. This article also describes some of the typical measurement results.
