The importance and authority of archival materials for historical research is well known. However, in modern China, many important events that have had a profound impact on history have, for a variety of reasons, left no record available for inspection by later generations. They exist only in the minds of a handful of parties. As these parties have passed away, the inside story of certain historical events has or will never be known again. Of course, there are exceptions. The facts of certain important events may be disclosed by the parties. Regrettably, some of these important clues have not drawn the attention of historians. At least part of this is due to scholars’ preference for archival literature, ignoring the value of oral history.
