严志达(1917～1999),出生于南通县的一个书香门第,自小便受到了文化知识的熏陶。7岁入家乡的一所农村初级小学读书,随后进入由其父创办的一所高级小学就读。他自幼酷爱读书,偏喜临摹,对文学艺术颇感兴趣。1930年进入江苏通州师范初中班读书,第一个暑假期间,堂兄送给他一部初中混合数学书,严志达一口气读完,不禁被数学的无穷奥妙深深吸引。进入南通中学(高中)后,在数理化方面都显露出突出的天分,但最感兴趣的还是数学。
Yan Zhida (1917 ~ 1999), born in Nantong County, a scholarly family, since childhood was influenced by the cultural knowledge. At age 7, he enters a rural primary school in his hometown and then enters a senior elementary school run by his father. He loved to study since childhood, prefer to copy, quite interested in literature and art. In 1930, he entered Tongzhou Normal Junior High School in Jiangsu Province. During his first summer vacation, his cousin gave him a junior high school mixed math book. Yan Zhida took a deep breath and was deeply attracted by the infinite mystery of mathematics. Into the Nantong high school (middle school), in the physical and chemical aspects are revealed outstanding talent, but most interested in mathematics.
