More than 20 years ago, the West German Embassy in China held a German modern painting exhibition in a university in Chongqing. Although each piece has a written interpretation, the audience present still can not understand or appreciate most works. At that time, I was asked by the German consular officers who were present at the Academy of Fine Arts: “What is the appreciation of the German people for these works?” The official replied very simply: “The reaction to it is the same with the Chinese audience.” Very unexpected response left a deep impression on me. There is not much difference in the basic feelings of human beings. Whether it is for the nationals of the developed and underdeveloped countries, the phenomenon that modernist paintings are alienated from the general public does not exist in the underdeveloped countries.
