孝字会意,上老下子,父子一体,孝道亦在其中。古人在造字时就已经透露出孝的含义和孝道的内在依据。孝亦有道,孝既不是浅薄的服从,也不是毫无原则的迁就。孝的内容是孝养,包括养身和养心两个方面。孝首先是孝养父母之身,努力保养父母的身体健康。儒家孝养身体的标准是随力而为,所谓“百善孝为先,论心不论迹,论迹家贫无孝子”。孝养父母身体不必表现为高标准的物质享受,子曰:“今之孝者,是谓能养。至于犬马,皆能有养;不敬,何以别乎?”可见尽心随力才
