口岸,命系着一个区域和城市对外开放的格局和经济发展的水平。改革开放以来,山东的口岸事业蓬勃发展,迄今,全省已有14个一类口岸、5个二类口岸相继对外开放。1994年,全省口岸外贸货物吞吐量突破了3000万吨,实际进口完成1503.6万吨,出口完成1605.4万吨,分别比上年增长了14.7%和40.4%;国际集装箱运输完成48.3万个标准箱,比上年增长40.7%;入出境旅客22.9万人次,比上年增长29.2%。山东口岸取得了令人瞩目的成绩。(一)烟台港是中国十大港口之一,到现在为止,这里已有烟台港、龙口港、莱山机场3个一类口岸和龙口渔港、芝罘岛水产集团渔码头2个二类口岸对外开放。另外,铁路还开办了转关运输业务,烟台造船厂经国家批准正式对外承修外籍船舶。
