霍桑在他的第三部罗曼司《福谷传奇》中向人们展示了一个崛起中的媒介社会。他认为,社会中媒介的充斥对人的意识和公民身份产生了深刻的影响,人们越来越缺少批判反思的精神,公共空间中对话的作用日渐式微,对未来的不确定性大大增加。霍桑同时还指出,媒介社会崛起的一个重要意义就是可以在不同主体间开展真诚和富有同情心的对话以应对浮于表面的交流,从而建立一种稳固持久的社会关系。
Hawthorne demonstrated to his people a rising media society in his third Romance division. In his opinion, the flooding of media in society has a profound impact on human consciousness and citizenship. People are increasingly lacking in the spirit of critical reflection. The role of dialogue in public space is diminishing and the uncertainty about the future is greatly increased. Hawthorne also pointed out that one of the great significance of the rise of media society is that sincere and compassionate dialogue among different subjects can be conducted in response to the superficial exchanges so as to establish a stable and lasting social relationship.
