The combination of favorable conditions encouraged a new attempt at international research - the Global Sedimentary Geological Project. Contemporary, relevant global trends are evident in communications, transport, commerce and politics; such trends are also seen in the geosciences of plate tectonics, paleoceanography, paleoclimatology and seismology. Sedimentary geology - a science that studies unconsolidated sediments and their petrified counterparts - the Earth’s outlook for participation in this expansion is well underway. Sediments and sedimentary rocks are archival records of much of the Earth’s history and evolution. These deposits contain most of the human resources necessary - fuel, water, metal deposits and building materials. Ancient sedimentary rocks are a kind of impulsive “electrocardiogram” of earth movement, and the evolution of hydrosphere, biosphere and atmosphere about 3 billion years is recorded in these rocks. In the last four decades, a series of significant advances have been made in sedimentary geology that provide the basis for new approaches and concepts that extend to global issues, including precise timing, the establishment of various depositional patterns, Ocean and atmosphere circulation; plate tectonics; isotope geochemistry; seismic stratigraphy and remote sensing. On the positive and favorable occasion to develop sedimentary geology, there is a need for an international research program to provide the focus, opportunity and motivation for research and analysis on a global scale. Three research themes are identified for this new research project: (1) Global Prosody and Events; (2) Sedimentology Records of Global Evolution; and (3) Global Sedimentary Facies Analysis. Using some of the basic questions in each of these topics to outline some examples of global research, which?
