“美学”概念在近代中国的传播经历了一段曲折的过程,期间有许多有意思的现象发生。“美学”之前,“审美之理”、“如何入妙之法”、“艳丽之学”曾经被创造出来对应Aethetics。19世纪末20世纪初的几年,随着现代西学知识经由日本大量涌入,“美学”也被引入到中国,这一期间,“美学”与教育学、哲学发生了密切的关联。“美学”被引入后,并未马上成为美学的唯一专属名称,很长一段时间里,“一物多名”与“一名多指”现象困扰着“美学”。
