南长城从黄丝桥古城回来,一个重要的去处便是仰慕已久的南方长城——苗疆边墙。生苗是那些不服从朝廷管辖的苗民,他们因不堪忍受政府苛捐杂税与民族欺压,经常揭竿而起。为安定边境和镇压苗民,明统治者便在生熟苗之间筑起长城。清朝乾嘉苗民起义后,更是大肆修建。以前,这里一直被称为“边墙”,县志上就有“苗疆边墙”一说。民国后边墙渐渐地荒废了,筑墙的石头也被当地苗民搬回家中,或置于田地里。沈老在《在我生长的地方》中描写道:“围绕这边疆僻地的孤城,约有五百左右的碉堡,二百左右的营汛。碉堡各用大石块堆成,位置在山顶头,随了山岭脉络各处走去……血染红了每一条官路,每一个碉堡……”
The Great Wall of the South is back from the ancient city of Huangsi Bridge. An important place to visit is the southern wall of Miao, the long-awaited southern wall.
