Background To determine the rate of vitamin D supplementation in children fed primarily with human milk. Identify and complement patient characteristics, parental beliefs and doctor strategies. The method is based on the practice research network for prospective observation. Pediatricians in the network are required to complete a supplementary vitamin D questionnaire on breastfeeding infants. Parents of children 6-24 months to complete the child start feeding type, duration of breastfeeding, supplementary formula and the use of multivitamins test. Parents to explain the degree of approval of vitamin D supplementation. Results A total of 44 pediatricians responded, of whom 36.4% indicated that they had recommended vitamin D supplementation for all breastfeeding children. A total of 2,364 questionnaires were completed by age-matched children; 1140 breast-fed infants received little or no vitamin supplementation for at least 6 months. These infants use vitamin D 15.9%. The use of vitamin D was significantly associated with a recommendation from parents to pediatricians (OR = 7.8) that human milk contains the required vitamins without supplementation (OR = 0.12). Mainly breastfeeding babies Most parents said the doctor recommended to add vitamin D, 44.6% of the children to do a supplement. In contrast, 67% of parents think that human milk contains the necessary vitamins, and only 3% of them have vitamin D supplemented. Conclusion Only a few breastfed babies did vitamin D supplementation. Good directional education for both doctors and parents needs to be done to increase adherence to supplemental vitamin D guidelines.
