1997 年冬季小潮期间,大面站和断面站观测结果说明,九龙江口存在着河水和海水交界的冲淡水锋面,该锋面落急时局限于河口湾内,涨急时扩展至湾口区水域。此外,退潮时河口冲淡水和厦门西港海水在湾口区形成另一水系锋面,其锋面对河口冲淡水和厦门西港海水的运移有重要作用。在冬季九龙江口SiO2-3 、NO-3 + NO-2 基本呈保守行为,它们的分布主要受控于高Si、N 的河水和低Si、N 海水的混合过程,其含量从河端朝海端呈递减趋势。PO3 -4 有明显的缓冲现象,表现为非保守行为,其水平分布比较均匀。
