《红楼梦》第八十二回有这样一句话:“肚子里原没有什么,东拉西扯,弄的牛鬼蛇神,还自以为博奥。”本文却意欲博奥一回,拉扯“东、西”红楼,从宏观层面对杨译本与霍译本进行再比较。就翻译的目的来看,杨宪益与霍克思都有充分再现原著不朽的文化艺术价值,促进中西文化交流的意向,因此他们在译文中尽可能完整地保留原文的内容,传达原文的文化意象。可就其现实的读者群而言,霍译的理想与现实更接近。总的说来,任何一部译作都是时代的产物,没有读者的译作是不成其为作品。杨译本与霍译本的存在就意味着原文的重生,意味着译者的成功。

The existence of the Yang translation and the Haworth translation means that the original text is born again, which means the translator’s success.
