气球花(Gomphocarpus physocarpus)又名钉子果,为萝摩科多年生亚灌木,原产非洲。株高2—3米。叶革质,无毛,叶片狭长,呈竹叶状,无柄,对生。花期7—8月,形如五星般的浅灰色小花从叶腋间抽出,伞形花序。小果嫩黄,可长至苹果般大小,果实呈圆形或卯圆形,果皮具钉头状软毛。气球果没有果肉,里面除种子外,几乎空空如也。果皮薄而近乎透明,用手轻轻挤压,似有空气溢出,如同手压气球,极富情趣。果实成熟后,果皮破裂,带有纤毛的种子可随风飘散。
