1991/92 GM of the United States GM’s EMD and Siemens of Germany jointly manufactured the first four diesel locomotives with AC drives. These locomotives were fitted with a 3900-hp (2900kW) diesel engine with a starting traction of 780kN, corresponding to an adhesion coefficient of 0.45 and a sustained traction of 556kN. Following extensive testing at the American Railroad Association’s Pueblo Transportation Testing Center, the new generation of SD60MAC locomotives are now in daily operation at the Burlington North Railway. This article describes the electrical equipment and commissioning in detail.
