王国维是中国传统文学话语向现代形态转换的奠基者。他通过理性话语的方式证明了文学的非功利性和游戏性特征,给文学话语独立提供了本体层面的理论支持;他通过功能分解的理论解构策略,论证了文学话语在价值、形式、学科等方面的独立性,证明了文学话语自律的必然性和必要性;他输入学理,引进西方现代文学观念、思维方式、专业术语、研究方法,通过自己的批评和研究实践,奠定了中国现代文学的理论与批评的言述机制和知识生产模式,开创了一个新的话语模式,宣告了中国传统诗学话语的终结。
