新、旧《唐书》评阎立本“以末技进身,非宰相器”。追踪溯源,应来源于唐代《国史》。唐初太宗、高宗两朝国史多出自许敬宗之手,而被人诟病。阎立本“末技进身”之评实则暗含隐情,其担任右相时的为政举措或许才是被“时人”诬以“非宰相器”的真实原因。张彦远曰:“自古善画者,莫非衣冠贵胄、逸士高人。”笔者一向以为非偏介之语。而阎立本的“才多辅佐”或许确是中肯的评价。
