The corrosion and oxidation rates of metallic materials are dominated by their surface films in almost all cases. These films may be vitreous in crystalline form over a few monolayer thicknesses and some properties may differ greatly from those of similar bulk materials. Research on these films has been applied to a modified surface methodology.
