海红子属蔷薇科,落叶乔木。其适应性强,耐寒、耐旱、耐瘠薄;病虫害少,尤为抗腐烂病;生长快,结果早,栽后2-3年挂果,10-15年进入盛果期,单株产量200—250kg,30年后可达500kg,80年后才开始衰弱。果实营养价值高,经分析:可溶性糖15.11％,可滴定酸1.04％,Vc2.83mg/100g,Ca、Fe、K、Mg分别为66.586、2.16、63.749、0.757mg/100g,硬度28.91b/cm~2,是果品加工的好原料。还可作为苹果接砧,以提高苹果抗病虫能力。
