周人起于黄土高原,相传始祖后稷生于邰(今陕西武功西南),后来公刘定居于豳(今陕西旬邑).古公亶父(太王)迁居于岐山之下的周原.文王时建立了丰京(今陕西长安西北).武王灭商以后,在丰的东面营建了镐京.周公东征,平定了殷遗民的叛乱,政治势力直至于海.为了加强对东部广大地区的统治,营建了洛邑(在今河南洛阳).称镐京为宗周,洛邑为成周.周初曾大规模分封诸侯国,其中大国有鲁(都曲阜)、齐(都营丘,今山东临淄北)、卫(都朝歌,今河南淇县)、宋(都商丘)、晋(都绛,今山西翼城西)等.楚(都丹阳,今湖北秭归东南)是荆蛮族人建立的大国,亦为周王室所册封.
