This research explores the effectiveness of using the Smart Malay-Mandarin Dictionary (SMMD) to improve writing skills. This online dictionary is designed for researchers, especially those who are non-native speakers of Chinese. Mainly use the learner's mother tongue that is Malay to query the Chinese vocabulary, the vocabulary involved include simple words, synthetic words, phrases and so on. Students use this online dictionary to prepare two types of homework, oral presentations of family and video tape oral performances. From student feedback we can see that SMMD helps to improve students' writing skills. Students also think SMMD can provide the vocabulary they need to express themselves. SMMD helps them more creatively write down the family members they want to introduce and give them enough vocabulary to prepare for a conversation with a spoken spoken English. The study also found that students in science and technology masters are more adept at using online dictionaries than those in science and technology masters. For this reason, the use of educational technology such as SMMD can play a constructive role in improving students' writing skills.
