“模棱两可”源于“摸棱”,语出《旧唐书·苏味道传》。唐朝宰相苏味道“尝谓人曰,‘处事不欲决断明白,若有错误,必贻咎谴,但摸棱以持两端可矣。’他是这样说,也是这样做的,于是别人便送了他一个“苏摸棱”的外号,后人也由此把不明确表示可否这种态度称作“摸棱”(模棱)。屈指算来,这一语词产生到现在已有千年的历史,词义可一直未变,这一点,查查《辞源》《辞海》《现代汉语词典》等工具书便可知道。不过,后来这一语词还演变为四字格的成语,成了我们现在常说的“模棱两可”,“摸棱”反而倒用得吵了,虽然二者的意义是一样的。一些同志有不同的看法:有的认为
