Gene and environment interplay has always been a fasci-nating topic in biology and evolution.Although the con-sensus has gradually emerged that what we observe is not decided by one side alone,there is still debate on the relative magnitude of individual contribution,or whether our un-derstanding of the whole system,assuming achievable eventually,can be approximated by some findings of the parts.Regardless of the position on the spectrum of re-ductionism and holism,one would still naturally have a positive reaction when an elegant,self-contained example is being unveiled and carved out from the vast,entangled web of genetic and environmental factors.The recent paper (Liu et al.,2021) from the research group of Chengcai Chu epi-tomized the combination of complexity and simplicity(Figure 1).
