The conference was held on April 17-19, 1986 at the University of Missouri-Columbia, United States, in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the work of the famous American cytogeneticist Ernest Robert Sears, and was organized by Professor Gordon Kimber. In addition to U.S. scientists, there are also representatives from Britain, France, Canada, Greece and China.
