五四前后的北京大学,是新文化运动的中心。但人们却时常可以见到一位着长衫马褂的老先生,脑后拖着一条长辫,在校园内昂然前行,这便是辜鸿铭。辜氏在当时的学术文化界有如一只怪鸟。他在课堂上高谈孔孟之道,以清王朝的遗老自居,却又是个精研西文的语言天才(他精通英、德、法、希腊、拉丁等九种语言),讲起外语来如珠走玉盘。连以英文见长的林语堂,在谈及辜氏时亦不能不承认:“无论才思及英文文字的风格,至今无出其右者。”(《无所不谈合集·与大千先生无所不谈》) 辜氏生于一八五七年,卒于一九二八年。他是我国最早赴英的留学
Peking University before and after May 4 is the center of the New Culture Movement. However, people often see an old gentleman in a gown with a long braid behind them. He is proudly walking around the campus. This is Ku Hung-ming. Ku at the time of the academic culture as a strange bird. He talked highly of the Confucianism and Mencius in the classroom and lived on the remains of the Qing dynasty. However, he was a linguistic genius who specialized in Western languages (he was proficient in nine languages including English, German, French, Greek and Latin) Jade plate. Even Lin Yu-tang, an English-known man, can not but recognize when he talks about Koo, “regardless of the genre of intellectual ability and the style of English writing, there is no other person to date.” Koo was born in 1857 and died in 1928.
