四十年来高分子作为材料发展很快,这些材料和衣、食、住都有联系,消费量都是比较大的。七十年代由于科学技术的迅速发展,在先进技术中需要具有特殊新功能的材料,高分子也成为整个新技术中的一个组成部份。这种功能材料用途宽广,但消费量较小。广义的功能性高分子包括在主链和侧链含有反应性高的功能团的天然高分子及合成高分子。目前高分子功能材料的研究有两大方向。第一是研究推进现代工业技术前进所需要的材料,第二是剖析目前已发现的生物功能,然后对生物进行改性或者合成与生物具有同样功能的非生物材料,这就是最近发展很快的仿生学。
