陶渊明的辞官原因,据萧统《陶渊明传》云:“岁终,会郡遣督邮至,县吏请曰:‘应束带见之。’渊明叹曰:‘我岂能为五斗米折腰向乡里小儿。’即日解绶去职。”《宋书·隐逸·陶潜传》与《晋书·隐逸·陶潜传》所载略同。此事为大家所熟知,乃是文学史上的一件美谈。应该说,不肯折腰“拜迎长官”的清高以及对乡里小儿的鄙视,很符合晋朝上层社会以门第自高的风气。稍有疑问的是,此事发生在义熙元年(405),距陶渊明二十九岁出仕已近十三年。在任彭泽令之前,陶渊明还担任过江州祭酒、桓玄幕僚、刘裕镇军参军、刘敬宣建威参军等职,对官场应酬应该早已习惯;而
