日本甜菜制糖公司与北海道大学农学部的木下俊郎教授合作,成功地开发了通过茎尖培养大量繁殖甜菜苗的技术。甜菜是异花授粉作物,即使费大力气发现一个优良性状的突变体,但要繁殖就必须进行杂交。杂交的优良性状分散地传给下一代。所以一直苦于找不到一个优良母本。如果利用这次研究成功的茎尖培养方法,一株可在三个月内育成遗传上性状相同的100株幼苗。为进一步提高繁殖率,以后还需要改进。如果能大量繁殖遗传上完全相同的幼苗,今后必将给甜菜的育种事业带来很大的革新。
