1939年7月我父亲应叶景葵、张元济之邀,从北平来上海筹建私立合众图书馆。当时办馆的目的是怕战乱将大量的民族文献销毁和失散。图书馆靠私人集资,书籍则由江浙的望族捐赠。我们刚到上海住在现在的复兴中路思南路口的一座花园洋房里。楼下是办公室、楼上则是书库和我们的卧室。书库是原来的舞厅,开始书不多,主要是叶家、张家和杭州蒋家的。当时我念小学,寒假期间父亲就让我看水浒、三国和西游记。怕伤眼,父亲将馆藏的木刻大字本给我看,到小学毕业这些名著就都看完了。
