People using the Internet in the United States account for about 54% of the world’s population, more than any other country. However, according to the Internet Industry Yearbook (an annual reference book for the online industry), the share of the United States is declining as network technology in other countries develops. The share of the United States dropped from 80% in 1991 to 65% in 1994 to 54% in 1997. Yearbook said: By the year 2000 may be reduced below 40%. As the number of people on the Internet continues to increase, the U.S. Internet companies are also increasingly fiercely contending for taking over overseas market share. In January, AOL announced it will expand its online presence in Germany and will also attract users through local television commercials. In December 1997, AOL announced that they had exceeded 1 million overseas users. Excite, which provides inquiries, announced that it will provide Web-based E-mail services and online education to millions of school-age children in the UK.
