The North connects with the United States, and the area is about one quarter of the United States (1.98 million square kilometers). The population is about one sixth of the U.S. (more than 25.5 million, according to the 1950 population Survey) of the United Mexican States, a federal republic with 28 states and one federal district (Mexico City and 12 towns and villages around the city), each state has jurisdiction over its local government. The Bundestag is divided into two houses of representatives, with one hundred and forty-seven members of the House of Representatives (one from each of the 150,000 residents) for a term of three years and is elected by universal suffrage. Fifty-eight members of the Senate, serving a six-year term, are comprised of two members, 28 states and one federal district. The president holds the power of state administration and is directly elected by the people for a term of six years and may not be reelected.
