节,是中华民族的传统美德,最早出现在金文中。《说文解字》云:“节,竹约也。”段玉裁注曰:“约,缠束也,竹如缠束之状。”《史记·龟策列传》云:“竹外有节理,中直空虚。”突出了竹的特征,即外有节理束之而不会轻易弯曲,内中空而挺拔,四季青翠,凌霜傲雨。竹的这些特征,正表达了节之意蕴——作为动词的节制、节约、节俭与作为名词的节操与节气。
