At the beginning of 19th century, British romanticist poet and critic Coleridge ’s theory of “symbolism superior to allegory” symbolized symbolism to discredit allegory and attempted to replace the traditional position of allegory with symbols. However, the symbolism in his works is closely linked with the allegory in the part-whole relationship, the sublime transformation, the translucent expression mode. In the interpretation of contemporary history from biblical history, the symbol also has historical prophetic and moral warnings of biblical allegory. The intrinsic link between symbolism and allegory can be traced back to the relationship between different things that are repeatedly discussed in Colear’s theory of metaphysics and which are “differentiated but not completely separated.”
