羊卓雍湖水电站曾于1985年开工建设,其后考虑到水电站建成发电后会使湖水位下降,影响生态环境,于1986年6月停建。后经全面论证,电站改为抽水蓄能电站全部安装抽水蓄能机组,可做到总体上不动用羊卓雍湖水量。电站建设规模为9.0万kW,安装6台1.5kW抽水蓄能机组,工程总投资约5.9亿元(含停建前3000万元),其中外资约3000万美元(进口机组设备、钢材等)。
