IL-13 is a newly discovered new cytokine. Produced by Th2 cells. The molecular weight of human IL-13 (hIL-13) was 17 kD (glycosylated) and 12.4 kD (non-glycosylated); the molecular weight of murine IL-13 58%. The genes of hIL-13 and mIL-13 are located on human chromosome 5 and mouse chromosome 11, and are closely linked to the IL-4 gene. The two genes have a homology of 66%. Recombinant IL-13 (γIL-13) has a variety of biological activities including stimulation of pre-myeloid cell proliferation; induction of monocytes expressing MHC class II antigens and CD23; promotion of B cell proliferation, differentiation and secretion of Ig; inhibition of inflammatory cytokine production; HIV-1 replication, anti-tumor and so on. The in-depth study will help to understand the role of IL-13 in the occurrence and development of inflammatory response and the regulation of immune response, and provide a theoretical basis for its clinical application.
