醮为祭祀之意。“建醮”是设置道场并聘请道士主持的祭典仪式,是道教庆典活动中较大型的法会活动。举行醮典又称为打醮、造醮或做醮。汉朝末年道教盛行。尔后“建醮”逐渐演变成“僧道设坛祭神”的专有名词。自南北朝开始,历代朝廷大多有建醮的祭仪,元朝和明朝尤其盛行。先民移居开垦台湾后.建醮逐渐在台湾生根,并且逐渐形成各自的做法,各地建醮多多少少都有些不同。
