盆景是自然景物在盆中的缩影。如在盆内栽上几株矮小枫树,布置得错落有致,再点缀几块拳石,若入枫林深处。又如苍劲挺拔的古老树桩,栽于盈尺盆内,经艺术加工,不仅能在盆内抽枝发叶,乃至开花结果,生意盎然。再如几块岩石,经加工布景种植点缀,于咫尺盆内能瞻万里之遥,方寸之中可辨千里之峻,颇有盆中山水甲桂林之趣。盆景就取材而论,可分为植物和山水两大类。植物中又有古桩和小苗之分,还有观花、观果、观叶、观干、观根之别。就栽植形式而言,在苏州地区就有单干式、双干式、丛林式、卧干式、悬崖式、露根式等等。以大小而论、又分巨型、中型和微型等。微型小景可托于手掌,又称掌上盆景。此外还有一种以植物与山水相结合的水旱盆景。
