Anna Christie was a four-act play by Eugene O’Neill in her early years, winning O’Neal the second Pulitzer Prize. Compared to many other O’Neill pieces, the play has not drawn enough attention from critics. However, the show was brought onto the stage frequently from the day it was born and went on the screen in 1930. This is enough to explain the audience’s love of it and the lasting vitality of the script. Up till now, the domestic research on the play mainly focuses on the helpless theme of people in the face of fate, but does not discuss the role played by gender in the tragedy of the protagonist. This article will use the corpus retrieval combined with the social and historical background of the script to re-examine the protagonist’s experience, thus revealing Anna’s tragedy is not entirely caused by fate, but more from the heroine in the social and historical environment, family environment, especially men The double standard about the virginity of men and women and the self-awareness of women gradually awakening in the right society.
