The author of interest traced blood recipients of more than 20,000 units to identify infections transmitted by blood transfusions. Design follow-up investigation of recipients. The main results of blood samples were collected 9 months after blood transfusion recipients, detection of HCV, HBV, HIV and HTLV-Ⅰ, type Ⅱ infection markers. Differentiate between a recent infection or a pre-transfusion infection by comparing blood samples collected prior to transfusion. Results 9,920 patients were tested. A total of 5,579 recipients of 21,923 units of blood were followed, but no transfusion-transmitted infections were detected. For hepatitis B, blood transfusion spread was 0 in 21,043 units of blood (95% confidence interval, 5,706 recipients with a risk of transfusion infection of 0 to 1); hepatitis C was 0/21, 800 units of blood (transfusion infection risk 0 to 1 / 5,911 recipients); HIV was 0/21, 923 units of blood (0-1 / 5,944 blood transfusions without infection); HTLV was 0/21, 902 unit blood (blood transfusion infection risk was 0-1 / 5,939 recipients). Three patients were infected with hepatitis B during hospitalization and after hospitalization but were not shown to be infected by the transfusion route. Of the 176 patients (3%) who had been infected with hepatitis B before hospitalization, 16 (0.29%) were infected with hepatitis C and 5 (0.09%) were infected with HTLV. CONCLUSIONS: In the UK, there are currently very few infections transmitted by blood transfusions and more likely to be acquired than other routes of transfusion through the hospital. Infected patients are more previously acquired infections.
