In this paper, we use the Theil index and its decomposition method to analyze the spatial distribution and changes of China’s manufacturing industry from 1980 to 2004, and make an analysis of the contribution to the spatial distribution of manufacturing industry. The study found that since the reform, the difference in the spatial distribution of manufacturing industry went through the process of first decreasing and then rising. However, the concentration of manufacturing industries in the coastal areas is a continuous process. Except for the slight decrease of geographic concentration of a few industries, the majority of industries showed an upward trend. The increase was more labor-intensive and high-tech industries. In the initial stage of reform, the contribution to the spatial distribution of manufacturing industries was arranged in descending order of capital-intensive industries - labor-intensive industries and technology-intensive industries. By 2004, the order of arrangement became a technology-intensive industry-capital Intensive industry - labor-intensive industries.
