Cai Guoqiang was born in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China. From 1981 to 1985, he studied at the Stage Art Department of the Shanghai Theater Academy and obtained a bachelor’s degree. He lived in Japan from 1986 to 1995 and moved to New York, United States in 1995 to date.
