LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM (Reuters) - Researchers have demonstrated a relationship between simian virus 5 (SV 5) and multiple sclerosis (MS) after 10 years of research. Monkey virus 5 has never been associated with anyone’s illness. SVS is a member of the paramyxovirus family, which also includes measles and mumps, initially detected in monkeys. Ten years ago, the virus was first isolated from the bone marrow of MS patients. However, studies at St Andrews University in Scotland have shown that SV5 is a common human infection and the SV5 infection rate is about 40% in the general population. However, only 1% of those infected develop into MS.
