Carbon materials, which are important for various industries and also for our life, can be called old but new materials because every 4~5 years new topics have been arisen. These car- bon materials having wide range of structure, texture and properties are classified depending on the C—C bonding, sp, sp~2 and sp~3, and defined carbon fami-ly, diamond, graphite, fullerene and carbyne, each member having various possibilities to expand their properties by introducing other species into their structures. Based on these facets, new strategy for carbon research, carbon alloys, has been employed in Japan and resulted in a great success for the development in carbon science and technol-ogy.
